frequently asked questions

• What is cosmetic dentistry?
Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Ramsey believe that all dentistry should be "cosmetic" dentistry! Our goal is for all patients of our office to have a healthy, beautiful, and confident smile. Cosmetic dentistry commonly refers to dental procedures and treatments aimed at improving or enhancing the esthetic qualities of a patient's smile. Commonly performed cosmetic procedures include teeth whitening, veneers, and all porcelain crowns and bridges. Sometimes just re-shaping or re-contouring the front teeth is sufficient to improve the overall smile appearance, and in many cases, a combination of treatment options is used to achieve the best result. Drs. Ferguson and Ramsey will be happy to discuss cosmetic treatment options with you in an effort to achieve a more beautiful smile.

• I'm really nervous about visits to the dentist. Are there any ways to manage my apprehension?
For an especially anxious patient, our office offers several options to make your dental appointment more pleasant. Nitrous oxide sedation works very well for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. Nitrous oxide is commonly referred to as "laughing gas" or "happy gas". Patients who use nitrous oxide are able to drive to and from their appointments with no hangover effect. For patients with more than average dental anxiety, we employ several types of oral sedation. This sedation is handled on a case-by-case basis. Patients interested in oral sedation should speak with Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Ramsey at their consult/exam appointment to decide which method of sedation is the most appropriate.

• I have dental insurance. Does your office accept insurance? What information do I need to bring with me to my appointment?
We accept most dental insurance plans offered by major insurers, and as a courtesy to our patients, we are happy to file your claim electronically. In order to file your claim, we will need a copy of your dental insurance card, the subscriber's ID # or Social Security #, and the subscriber's date of birth. We always suggest that you call your insurer to verify dental coverage eligibility and benefits before your appointment. Please call our office, and we will be happy to answer any insurance questions you may have.

• I'm unhappy with the color of my teeth and I've heard about tooth whitening. What are my options?
Our office is pleased to offer a variety of whitening options for our patients. We offer the ZOOM!® in-office whitening system which utilizes a powerful light to activate bleach that is applied directly to the teeth in 3-4 different 15 minute sessions. The ZOOM! procedure enables patients to whiten their teeth in just one appointment. We also offer custom made bleaching trays and professional strength Crest Whitestrips Supreme for those who would rather whiten their teeth at home. Each option works well, and Dr. Ferguson or Dr. Ramsey will be happy to discuss which options would work best for you.
